Best Monsoon Drinks in India: 19 Warm and Immunity Recipes

The first heavy shower of the year is my cue to put the kettle on. These are the monsoon drinks I actually make at home in Bengaluru when the sky turns grey and the air goes cool and damp. Warm, lightly spiced, and easy on the stomach, they are the cups my family reaches for between June and September.

I have grouped them so you can find what you need fast. Immunity kadhas for a scratchy throat, plain digestive waters for after the pakoras, gentle herbal teas, a full spread of chai, and a few richer drinks for the cosy evenings. Every recipe is one I make myself, with ingredients from the local kirana, and each links to the full method.

Immunity Kadhas and Herbal Decoctions

When the rains bring a scratchy throat, this is what I make first. Slow-simmered, spiced, and sipped warm.

  • Immunity Kadha (new). Tulsi, ginger and whole spices boiled down into a warm, sharp, jaggery-sweetened cup.
  • Tulsi Kadha (new). A lighter, tulsi-forward decoction for everyday sipping through the wet months.
  • Haldi Doodh (new). Golden turmeric milk with a pinch of pepper and ginger. A gentle, cosy night-time drink.

Digestive Waters for the Rains

Damp weather and too many pakoras can upset the stomach. These plain warm waters settle it.

  • Ajwain Water (new). Carom-seed water, boiled until sharp and golden. The classic fix for a heavy monsoon meal.
  • Jeera Water (new). Cumin water, boiled or soaked overnight. Light, warm and easy on the gut.

Warming Herbal Teas

Caffeine-light infusions for between chai. Fragrant and soothing while the rain comes down.

  • Lemongrass Ginger Tea (new). Bruised lemongrass and ginger steeped with honey. Bright, fragrant and calming.
  • Dalchini Tea (new). A warming cinnamon infusion, sweet and woody, ready in under ten minutes.
  • Honey Lemon Ginger Tea. The three-ingredient cup everyone reaches for at the first sniffle.
  • Kashmiri Kahwa. Green tea with saffron, cardamom and almonds. A fragrant, festive monsoon warmer.
  • Tulsi Mulethi Chai. Holy basil and liquorice root tea, soothing for the throat on a grey day.

Chai for a Grey Afternoon

No monsoon list is honest without chai. Here is the full spread, from cutting to clay-pot.

  • Masala Chai. The everyday spiced milk tea. Ginger, cardamom and a long boil.
  • Adrak Chai. Ginger tea, brewed strong. The daily staple when the weather turns.
  • Karak Chai. Gulf-style strong spiced milk tea, thick and dark.
  • Tandoori Chai. The viral smoky clay-pot chai, perfect for a rainy evening with friends.
  • Cutting Chai. Mumbai-style strong sweet half-glass tea. Made for monsoon station platforms.

Hot Chocolate and Coffee Comfort

For the evenings when you want something richer than tea.

How I pick a monsoon drink

If the throat feels off, I start with a kadha or a ginger tea. If a meal sat heavy, it is ajwain or jeera water. For a plain grey afternoon with nothing wrong, it is chai, every time. Keep them warm, keep the spices gentle, and you have the whole season covered.

Monsoon Drinks FAQ

What are the best drinks to have in the monsoon?

Warm, lightly spiced drinks suit the rains best. Immunity kadha, tulsi kadha, haldi doodh, ginger and lemongrass teas, and a strong masala chai are all good choices. Keep them warm and go easy on heavy dairy if your stomach feels off.

Which monsoon drink is good for a sore throat?

Many people sip honey lemon ginger tea, tulsi kadha or a simple ginger kadha when their throat feels rough in the rains. Add honey to warm, not boiling, liquid so it stays pleasant.

Can I drink kadha every day during the monsoon?

A small cup of a mild kadha once a day is fine for most people through the wet season. Treat it as a comforting habit rather than a medicine, keep the spices gentle, and skip it if it does not agree with you.

What can I drink for digestion in the monsoon?

Plain ajwain water or jeera water, taken warm, are the usual home choices after a heavy or fried monsoon meal.

Not sure when the rains reach your city? The India Meteorological Department publishes the official monsoon onset dates every year.
